-Eleventh ANNUAL JOHN J. LYON MEMORIAL OURAY COLORADO RIDE-

August 7-9, 2008

Sponsored by the Utah Trail Machine Association, the John J. Lyon Ouray Colorado Ride is based out of Ouray, Colorado. Riders are encouraged to bring their spouse and/or family members as in addition to riding there is plenty of sightseeing and shopping at Silverton, Telluride, and Ouray.

This ride is in memory of John Lyon who was a friend to all who ever rode down a trail with him. He lost his life at Engineer Pass on the annual Ouray Colorado Ride in 1997 through a rare medical condition and unfortunate accident. We honor his memory with a stop on our ride at a small marker fabricated by Victor Venturo. His widow, Fran, lives in New Jersey and appreciates the kindness of those who remember her late husband and friend.

Non dual-sport bikes and ATV's can be used on this ride with some discretion. Local police are certainly cooperative. However, machines should be street legal where possible for limited highway use and parking in town during lunch.

Coming through Montrose, riders should plan on stopping at the Russell Stover Outlet Store for chocolate bargains and delicious samples.

Plan on rain wear--you will encounter rain and some mud. A waterproof riding- jacket is sufficient, waterproof pants are nice. The temperature is in the 60's to 70's during the daytime. Jet your bike for high altitude riding. We begin at 7,000 feet and ascend to over 13,000 feet altitude.

Each evening riders, spouses, and guests meet in a natural hot springs pool for relaxation and conversation. Everyone enjoys visiting and reminiscing.

Take US 500 to Corkscrew Gulch. Travel to California Gulch, turn off on Placer Gulch Road and visit old mining camps and/or hippie cabins. Travel into Silverton for lunch with spouses.

LUNCH

Backtrack on Animas River road to historic Animas Forks mining area for sightseeing /or/ turn off at Minnie Gulch and take La Garita Stock Driveway a single track Colorado 500 Trail System over the Continental Divide to Carson. At Animas Fork see the remnants of the Mickey Breen Mine and the San Juan Chief Mine & Mill. This was the original Stagecoach route to Ouray from Lake City. Travel Cinnamon Pass and turn around /or/ ride on to Carson, old mining camp, then on to Lake City and gas stop. Continue on Alpine Loop to Engineer Pass, 12,800, and stop at John Lyon Memorial. Ascend Mineral Point for breath-taking view. Return to US 500 and Ouray via Alpine Loop visiting various abandoned mining sites.

SATURDAY 9th

ALPINE LOOP, CORKSCREW GULCH, BLACK BEAR, TELLURIDE, IMOGENE PASS, SILVER BASIN, 70 miles.

Take Million Dollar Highway (US 500) to Alpine Loop climbing up to Poughkeepsie Gulch junction and over to Corkscrew Gulch. Descend to US 500 Hwy and travel to summit of Red Mountain Pass. Take Black Bear Road turnoff. Take the single track route to Trico Peak, 13,000 overlook. Turn off at Ingram Lake and explore old mine shaft (if gate is unlocked). Visit small falls before getting back on Black Bear Road. View Idarado Mine, the Black Bear Basin, and the town sites of Congress and Summit. One can see the ski area of Telluride and on a clear day the LaSalle Mountains of Utah. Descend the infamous "Steps" by Ingram Falls and travel down to the base of Black Bear to view the Bridal Veil Falls before riding into Telluride (8,700) for lunch.

LUNCH

Depart for Imogene Pass (13,100) stopping at Tomboy Mine, one of the richest gold mines in Colorado's history. Ascend to the top of Imogene Pass (13,114). You can ride up to 13,500 by climbing a narrow single track trail. Descending one can view the Red Mountains while passing Yellow Rose Falls and the famous Camp Bird Mine property. Follow the Camp Bird Road back to Ouray.

Take side trips to Silver Basin, Governor Basin, and Yankee Basin traversing switchbacks to an altitude of 11,200 at the Twin Falls. Pass through the ghost town of Sneffels. View the Camp Bird, Atlas, Ruby Trust and Revenue Mines.
