Copper Canyon 2007

COPPER CANYON, MEXICO, This year, sometime this September.

The Utah Trail Machine Association (UTMA) is sponsoring another ride to Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre) or Sierra Tarahumara, located 400 miles south of El Paso Texas, in the state of Chihuahua, one of the largest of the 31 United Mexican States. Situated in northwestern Mexico within the Sierra Madre Occidental, the deep canyons of Sierra Tarahumara are claimed to be four times larger than the Grand Canyon. The four major canyons are Batopilas, Copper, Urique and Sinforosa, one of the deepest canyons in North America. These canyons are deeper than the Grand Canyon by almost 300 feet, but not as wide. They are home to over 75 thousand Tarahumara Indians. Famous for their running skills they call themselves the Raramuri, The Running People.

The Sierra Tarahumara forests contain the largest stands of old-growth forest in the Americas. They produce more pine and oak than any other area in the world.

The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad, which traverses the area is one of the most spectacular train rides in the Western Hemisphere, passing through 86 tunnels and crossing 36 bridges as it climbs almost 8000 feet into the rugged Sierra Madres.

The Copper Canyon MotoMochila (bikepacking) Adventure is designed for a limited group of dirt-bike riders. You must be a current member of UTMA in order to participate. Travel will be mostly on remote dirt roads with some pavement. There will be no chase vehicle.

We will spend six days on the trail and five nights in various accommodations; Last years approximate cost per participant was $650. We are limited on the number of member riders so make your reservations early

Make your reservations by sending a non-refundable deposit of $25 and include your name, address, telephone number(s), e-mail address, and bike you plan on riding. You will receive an e-mail confirmation. Paul K Edmunds, Ride Coordinator, 801-491-6266, PO Box 912, Springville, UT 84663-0912
