2007 UTMA Moab Area Ride

• PLANNED RIDES

• Friday – 8:45am Riders Meeting at Steel Benders Trailhead

  • Ride Starts 9:00 am

• Lunch on the trail.

  • Back to town by approx. 4:00 – 5:00 pm

• Steel Bender loop is really just a warm-up loop (sandy road, a number of ledges, drop-offs, scenic stops) head south down highway 191 towards Monticello, to mile post 113 (2.2 miles north of the Kane Creek rest stop) to Behind the Rocks trail, down Pritchett Canyon via White Knuckle hill to Kane Creek Road. (Sand and gravel roads, numerous drop-offs, Pritchett canyon has loose rocks, numerous ledges and rock steps, scenic stops)

• For those that want more - Moab Rim trail to the Indian Ruins and back (More rock steps/ ledges, sandy roads, some slick rock)

• Supper and a soak in the hot tub.

• More food and hot tub.

• Saturday – 8:45am Riders Meeting at Poison Spider Trailhead

  • Ride Starts 9:00 am

• Lunch on the trail.

  • Back to the trailhead by approx. 3:00 – 4:00 pm

• Poison Spider Mesa trail to the Golden Crack and back to the trailhead via the Golden Spike trail (approx. 30 miles mostly in lower gears, gravel roads, sand, slickrock and hundreds of rock steps / ledges, scenic stops all along the way).

• For those that want more - Slick Rock Trail in the late afternoon (5-10 miles - slickrock, some sand and a few steps).

DIRECTIONS

Friday – Meet at Steel bender - From Downtown Moab drive south on Hwy 191. Turn Left (East) on Spanish Trail Road and follow around. Drive past Murphy Lane and road name changes to Westwater Road and curves left. After the curve there will be a dirt road to the right. This is the trail head.

Saturday - Poison Spider Trailhead - Leave Moab going North on Highway 191. About a mile past the Colorado River bridge turn west on Highway 279. The trail head is about 6 miles farther down Highway 279 on the right.

CAMPING / LODGING

Limited camping is available near the Poison Spider Trailhead and I believe at the bottom of Kane Creek. This is the start of the busy season in Moab so you may want to take that into consideration when finding accommodations.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Those without street legal bikes will need to make arrangements to get from one trailhead to the next. We will be traveling across city streets and for approximately ¼ mile on highway 191.

• Check tire pressure – lots of rock steps

• Spare levers and /or bars guards recommended

• Elbow and knee guards are recommended

RIDE COMMENTS

• Bring plenty of water. Also, drink plenty of water before starting the ride.

• Weather can be warm and sunny or cold and wet or a bit of both the same day – please come prepared

• Lunches will be at a scenic spot a little over half way through the rides, bring your own lunch, energy bar, or whatever.

• Some trail sections of these ride are popular with non-motorized users. Always assume there could be a hiker, horseman, or mountain biker around each blind corner. Be courteous when approaching non-motorized users and yield right-of-way.

• Stay on the trails.

Please prepare and check your bike before the morning of the rides.
