November 10th & 11th, 2006

Mormon Trail on Friday.

Fry Canyon on Saturday.

This ride is for motorcycles only, intermediate and advanced with a maximum of 25 participants.

Please be prepared to ride in any weather, temperature and carry with you all supplies and tools you will need for on-trail repairs including flat tires.  Machines must be in good conditioned and well maintained and equipped with adequately muffled, Forest Service approved spark arrester. Carry plenty of water and your lunch.

Friday:

Meet at the Cal Black Airport at 10:00 AM.  Please be ready to ride by 10:15 AM.  If you are riding across Lake Powell on the Ferry, (see Ferry schedule below) you can use the time to get into your riding gear.  Once off of the Ferry it is a 10 mile drive to the Cal Black Airport.  We will be parking off of the south side of the pavement just prior to the airport.

The ride along the Mormon Trail is full of challenging slick-rock and sand.  The ride has a way of wearing you out, both physically and mentally.  Total distance of this ride will vary depending on skill level, machine reliability and the interests of participants.   We will plan to ride a minimum of 60, but as many as 75 miles. It is basically an in-and-out ride to the top of Cottonwood Hill.  A short hike along the wagon route is available for those who are so inclined. Lunch will be at the top of Cottonwood Hill with it’s great view of Lake Powell and Hole In The Rock nearly 5 miles away.   Then, if time allows, we could ride a challenging old mining road to the Rincon and the shores of Lake Powell.  If you are a history nut like me, this ride leaves you in total awe and appreciation for the pioneers who first traveled it.  A good book concerning the San Juan Mission is “Hole in the Rock” by David E. Miller.

We will rent housekeeping units.  These rent for about $125.00 per night and will sleep 6- 10.  Each unit has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with showers, a kitchen stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils and cups.  A living room with a television, couch, chairs and lots of floor space for sleeping bags.  There is an outdoor grill which requires charcoal briquettes.  Bring all of the food that you will need for dinner.  There is a gas station (with diesel) and convenience store near the housekeeping units.  The pumps have 24 hour access with credit cards.  The manager is usually available to open the store after hours.

Saturday

The Saturday ride will be either on Piute Pass Trail or Jacobs Chair Trail.  To be determined later.  The ride will be 50-60 miles.  These trails are challenging old mining roads with fantastic views of Fry Canyon, White Wash and Red Canyon.  Again, pack what you need.
